Suzunami "Breaking Waves" 2007

The basis of surf culture involves primarily the love of surfing, the hunt for great waves, and life in and around the ocean. Surfing is an expression of freedom. When you are out in the ocean you are able to forget everything; you feel truly free of restraint. Several factors influence the shape and quality of breaking waves: the surf break, the direction and size of the swell, the direction and strength of the wind and the ebb and flow of the tide.

On November 11, 1943, Suzunami sunk as a result of a U.S. carrier air raid in Rabaul, New Britain. The Suzunami warship was reportedly hit directly by bomb while loading torpedoes near the mouth of Rabaul Harbor. Suzunami's bombing resulted in the death of 148, including Commander Kamiyama.

This piece is dedicated to those that died on the Suzunami in WWII. It honors those individuals fighting on behalf of one of the most important human rights... freedom.

This is one in an eight part series.
